hello,

i am new here but i have been reading the forums here for a while.

i just dont understand why people continue to sell and buy on ebay, considering all the problems that they have? they are a selfish company, yet no one has been able to topple them from their monopoly in online commerce.

what do you guys think are their primary strengths?

i think it is their feedback system. it gives credibility to the buyer and the seller.

i would really like to hear what you guys think.

Well, they've been changing their feedback system lately, and I don't think they have too many fans of all their changes.

However, they have spent years creating their HUGE reputation, so it's harder for other sites to gain the traffic and sales that they have. So, I think they're still doing well is because they have the traffic, the sellers, the buyers, etc.

But, more alternative sites are popping up, so I hope that these sites will prosper and lure many ebayers away.

If EBay's new CEO keeps up with the high fees, a lot of people might try and find alternatives.

In my opinion people use ebay because..... well, because people use ebay.

The Feedback system is great like you said but I don't think that's the only reason people stay with ebay. All auction sites have some sort of feedback system.

Sellers want to sell where buyers are and ebay has the power to get buyers to their site.

in my opinion, ebay is like cleanex is to the tissue world... it is the household name. People also enjoy the feeling of getting a deal... i say "feeling" because a lot of times it isn't a deal at all :? just my two cents

yes, ebay has become other name for auction site. Many auction sites are trying to compete ebay but still ebay is on top...and it is because ebay is taking much care for buyers...because they know that, sellers will be there if a continuous stream of buyers is there..

I absolutely agree with the past 2 comments.

eBay has just become such a big household name that people are still using it. They get the most traffic, probably more than all the alternative sites combined. People still use it because it's become people's daily lives.

eBay is still on top because it's been around the longest. It's got all the money in the world to do whatever it wants. However, I don't think they're the ones taking care of the buyers. The sellers on the site is taking care of the buyers, and the sellers are getting screwed by eBay with the nickel and dime fees and bad management. eBay has been getting more powerhouse big company sellers lately like Buy.com, which screws up the small sellers, so the buyers are good, but not the sellers.

We just have to accept the fact that eBay will always be here. We can only do so much alone with word of mouth and whatever else we can do to move more people to alternative sites. It helps and I'm glad it does, but eBay is still eBay.

I think ebay did a really astounding job at brand management. Ebay is a household name, and has been since 2000/2001. That was only a few years after the inception of ebay. I think that is why so many people flock to ebay.

iOffer is a great alternative, I've sold on there several years ago back in 2003/2004 however they have not done a lot of brand management. It's not a household name, you never hear people saying , "Sell it on iOffer" on TV. Most of the people who flock to ioffer, are people fed up with ebay.

Anyway, that's why I think people run to ebay. Great branding.

You cant really beat it as a distribution chain for consumers. I mean they have millions of visitors a month, and they are not just freebie seekers these are people going to there with an intent to purchase, if you put products up at the right time, to the right market with a follow up sales system in place for multiple future purchases you can make a lot of money.

Yeah ebay is almost a part of culture now. Even people who almost never use the Internet know about ebay. That does not mean that they will be number 1 forever

The negative reaction they are creating with their changes opens the door for someone to take their spot,or a least a sizable chunk of it.

primary strength? i think their multi-million active users. As a seller you get a good chance to your items be sold because of the many active buyers. And as a buyer, you can choose from several sellers giving you more options.
