The inability to know just whether you are bidding against 0 or 1000 people.

Its an adrenalin rush for some people... just like backing the stock exchange or many other things where you don't control the conditions...
Why give a man a light and keep him warm for a night when you can set a man on fire and keep him warm for the rest of his life?

And contrary to what most think about the big site stifling competition, it actually gives users a fighting chance to sell their items in an easy and convenient way, where they normally would have had no way to do so.
If you really want to make money with eBay, check out the eBay Developers web-site. You can use their API to make a mash-up. Here is an example I made: Buy It Nearby . PM me if you need any help getting started.

Online auctions are easiest way to market a product and its fun and easy process for buyers and sellers .. :)
