I think that when first starting out, sticking to one area of products is the best route. I recommend trying to find local sources for your products (thrift stores, outlets, bargain stores, etc). Then, once your business grows and you are established in a market, move on to locating wholesale sources.

When first starting out it can be difficult to decide on what to sell. I agree that information products are an excellent item to sell. On eBay, you can generally get 2 or 3 times more for your info product if you put it on a CD. eBayers like to receive things in the mail. This doesn't mean that ebooks won't sell though. I always test both to see what fetches the highest price.

Before deciding on anything to sell, be sure to do your homework. Look through completed auctions and see what has been selling. And for how much.

jumble,
yes, creating your own ebook is by far the easiest, cheapest product you can sell. and once created you can sell over and over again. no shipping and delivery, print addresses etc. It can be truly a big winner...
just try your best with writing something that people really want to have.

all the best for your first ebook
Cheers
Thomas

If you are just starting out and plan to use ebooks
there are a bunch of things to keep in mind.

-Build your feedback first.
-Do not expect to make a lot off the selling of the ebook,
the competition and pricing is very tough.

I would agree that you need to stick with an "industry" or
specific product. Do not try to be everything to all people
or you will not have much repeat business.

Best,
Aryeh

I personally wouldn't bother with the ebooks route, seems too time consuming for little reward but you might find this site useful

You can always sell other people's stuff as a Trading Assistant. The one benefit of being a trading assistant is that you do not tie up your cash in inventory.

At the time of writing, the requirements for a Trading Assistant are:
You’ve sold at least 10 items in the last thirty days.
You have a feedback score of 100 or higher.
97% or more of your feedback is positive.
Your eBay account is in good standing.

It is not an easy business but it can be profitable.

Sell items you are familiar with. Or make sure to find out as much about your product as you can. I have lost potential customers on eBay when not being able to answer "Does this work, or have...."...my response being, "Im not sure..." Doesnt sound too good for a potential customer.

Sourcing that product is the next challenge.

Competition in that market is what will make, or break you. Make sure you can compete with your product and skill level for getting sales.

Good advise there. I'll tell you something else. I think it is a bonus if you can sell something you actually take an interest in.

I'm a guitar junky. When I get back into selling again, which I plan to do after I semi retire, I'm going to sell guitars, effects, amps etc. I think if you are passionate about your product, you'll do better, because your enthusiasm will benefit potential customers in your descriptions of your product, pricing, packaging, etc etc etc.

Good e-books are best! Don't sell one of those useless junks.

I'd recommend trying to sell something that you have a lot of passion / knowledge about. It will make the whole process MUCH easier!

Maximize Profits with Low Priced, No Reserve Auctions: Getting that first bid is critical, as buyers are more likely to jump in if there are already bids on an item. Similarly, reserve prices can cause buyers to lose interest if they assume an item is overpriced. Many successful sellers set a low opening bid with no reserve to jumpstart bidding and increase their final selling price.

FREE HOW TO SELL ON EBAY GUIDE

Before listing an item on eBay, it's a good idea to research similar items that have already been sold successfully on the site. You can find great information on pricing, features, and key "buzz words" that attract buyers--and compare your item to others in the marketplace by using Completed Listings.

Completed Listings shows you which items sold and at what price which will help in pricing your items. Also it indicates what each seller charged for shipping. When you are ready to sell just click the link "List an item like this" to get started. Shocked
