The Problem: eBay has a “Verify Your Phone Number” page that is the apparent last step before posting an auction. On this page you verify your phone number, click a button, and eBay's automated phone confirmation system calls you. It can't call me successfully, which I suspect is because I have the "No Solicitation" service which simply states that I don't accept solicitors, after stating this it puts the call through. This service has been around for maybe 10 years. When eBay's system calls me my phone rings, I pick up, and I hear nothing.
Day 1:
I try and get eBay's automated phone verification service to call me. My phone rings, I answer, no one is there, I hear nothing. The call then disconnects. I try this about 5 times at which point the website tells me I've tried too many times and that I'll have to wait 24 hours.
I get on live chat with eBay's support help desk and they tell me there is nothing they can do and I'll have to wait the 24 hours. They seem perplexed by my inquiry as to why they don't have a backup verify service with real people.
Day 2:
I get on live chat again and explain that their automated system isn’t working and that my phone rings but no one is there and that I hear nothing. The representative gives me a link to the “Verify Your Phone Number” page. I explain again that there is nothing wrong with my phone number and that the system is calling me but no one is on the other end when I pick up. They give me a link with a phone number to call customer support.
I call in to their help desk, I explain to the lady that their automated system is calling me but I hear nothing and that I have no solicitation ( I went in to much more detail ). She emails me a link, I click it and it takes me to the Verify Your Phone Number page. I explain this all over again. She gives me another link to another help desk that can supposedly manually verify me. I email them and it says they’ll get back in 24 to 72 hours.
Day 3:
I receive the email from the manual override helpdesk and it says how very sorry they are, they give me a link, it takes me to the Verify Your Phone Number page.
At this point, I’m quite pissed, mainly because I hate stupid people. Not people who simply don’t know something, but the real idiots, apparently the kind that work for eBay.
