I was thinking today of starting to sell stuff on ebay just as a hobby. Just selling random stuff around the house doesn't really sound fun to me though. I was thinking of investing say $500 and buying x amount of products at a lower cost and then selling them on ebay.

I want to treat it like a business and see how well I can do. I figure if things don't go well then I'm only out $500 worst case.

Anyone have any idea on what type of products might fight my criteria? I don't really know anything about business so any information would help. Should I try to get some sort of license that allows me to buy things at a lower cost?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

I'm not sure if you need a license to buy wholesale, but I'm sure if you do your research, you can find some stuff for a cheaper price. If you want to know what's selling, I think on eBay you can search what the top selling items are, and maybe start there.

As for selling on eBay itself, many people are staying away from using eBay, because of all its charges and PayPal fees as well. So your $500 investment might go quicker than you might think.

If you want, you can try some alternative sites to start selling. One site I've grown to like is iOffer. There's no listing fees, store fees, pictures fees, etc. Basically, your items will stay on forever until it sells. You just have to be patient and do some self-promoting.

There's other sites as well. Do your research and see which one fits you better. Just be aware that none of the other sites will have as much traffic as eBay, but to save money and make more money, you have to work harder at it, right?

My suggestion to people starting out on ebay is to sell what you love. Think of your hobbies, joys, what makes you happy. Then start researching those things on ebay to see what they are selling for. Search around the internet to see what type of demand for your product there is. Your love for the niche alone will not make it successful financially but it will make your work more desirable. Once you have picked your niche......get going!

Asuming you are in the USA, i suggest you take a look at some of the UK wholesale websites or even on ebay UK. I sell counterfeit money pens here in Northern Ireland, and at the minute, most of my business is in the US and Euro-Zone, but keep it to a product you know a bit about.

Hi,

Although I know you mentioned that selling stuff from your home doesn't interest you I would suggest to start there.

Here's why....

It will help you get familar with the entire listing / selling process and learn your way around eBay. Usually when people invest money right off the bat it adds unnecessary preasure. And it's hard to learn under financial preasure.

List a few things and make a few bucks before you invest money or time in trying to start out with a big business.

Good Luck!

I would start selling the items around the house that you do not want anymore. eBay is very cut-throat, and can e very difficult to find the right product to sell. There are way too many scams and dropship programs out there that wont work. If you have can build or create merchandise from scratch, or find valuable wholesale lots then you might be on the right track. Be careful and always lookout for Scams.

The new ebay is here!!!
They now have a monopoly with paypal. I tried signing up and using my own merchant account to accept payments. Ebay tried to discourage me in an effort to force me to sign up to paypal to accept payments. They have everyone brainwashed into thinking they are safe and secure. They are far from that. Look them up on The Better Business Bureau website. 7040 complaints against them since January and counting. Ebay and paypal will soon be a thing of the past with their fees going up and their scam and monopoly with Paypal is making people walk away. Paypal ALWAYS takes the side of the buyer. I sold an item to a buyer in California. I mailed it and they claimed they received an empty box. Paypal refunded their money-no questions asked!!
They are a scam.
Sell on Amazon.com.
Ebay's stock is dropping fast and Amazon's stock has skyrocketed.
You tell me that ebay is a great place to sell now.
Think about it before you bash me for stating the truth!!
BEWARE of the ebay success kits that are sold by ebay. Yes, every single one of them, and they are designed to make you use paypal to accept payments and not one of them mentions anything about moneybookers or any other payments accepted.
Ebay does not let sellers use Google Checkout because Ebay does not make money from payments that go through Google Checkout. They claim that their system does not support it but that is a load of crap.
Moneybookers is a horror show, once again an attempt to discourage you to use Paypal to accept Payments.
Paymate is allowed but only to power sellers. What are you supposed to use in the meantime?? You guessed it- Paypal!
Just remember, ebay is no onger seller friendly, and if you are considering opening an ebay business-be warned, and I hope you have a few thousand dollars to throw away to the greedy giants.

hi there! i know some eBay sellers who used eBay to find stuff to resell. These stuff are usually cheap and mostly sold in bulk then you sell it piece by piece.

One great cheap source is from garage sales. In there, you can find cheap and unique items. There are still a lot more sources but you can start from here.

I hope you the best of luck in your eBay biz plan. Let me share with you an eBay selling manual that will surely help a lot. Click here: http://www.undergroundauctionlab.com/7- ... ebay-sins/
