Say I'd like to sell a product or service, which is also available on my own external (to ebay) website.
The external website has samples of the product, etc etc.
Is it ok to put a link to these samples from inside the ebay auction?
Do you know if ebay allows this?
I plan on asking ebay directly about this, but was interesting if anyone has had any experience with this particular situation.

From my understanding you cannot put external links in your eBay auction listing, but you can put them in your About Me page. The About Me page is the loop-hole around a lot of eBay's limitations in auction listings.

Hope this helps,

Talk,

eBay does allow you to link to your website in your auction...but the link must be to provide more information about the item only. If you are selling the item for the same price on your site, eBay may cancel your auction.

But in general, if the site provides more info about your item and the price is higher than your price on eBay, you should be OK.

Your About Me page is the prime place to promote your website. I would also suggest putting some kind of newsletter signup form on your About Me page. This will help you build a list of customers. But starting with a link to your site is a great idea.

Then you can simply invite people to visit your About Me Page in your auctions.

Hope this helps.

You need to be very careful about abiding by eBay rules. A couple of times I have added links in error and my auctions were cancelled.

As mentioned above, you can place as many links as you like in your "about me" page - although I am not sure how you get great traffic to the "about me" page.

You can place external links in ebay classified ads, these ads appear amongst the regular listings you may have seen them. You can only do this at the moment, on ebay.com the US site, but you don't need to reside in the US to use ebay.com - not all catagories are covered but quite a few are, especially ones suitable for info products.
