The other day I had a reply to an ad for sale, the buyer agreed to pay the price plus shipping. I sent him a paypal address and a few hours later I got an email stating I received money....
The problem was, the email came to the wrong email address, so I went to paypal.com and there was no money!
I looked over the letter, it was a fake, An hour later I got another email stating where to ship... guess where? Yup, Nigeria!
So now they want your items and not just your money!!
Like always, log in to any account directly by typing it in the browser, and confirm everything!
PS... 3 days later I got a letter stating he was reporting me for fraud if I did not produce a shipping tracking number!

Watch out with PayPal! I sold a Nokia N95 8GB phone on eBay, using Paypal, for $500 plus $35 postage. The transaction ID is 52F59575C25824352. Item number of the auction is 290251938218. User ID of being reported is pal-eng2. The item listed as paid on eBay, I got the usual email notification from Paypal that the transaction took place. Because of the amount and the buyer being out of the Country, I waited 48 hours to ship it. Went back to Paypal, the money was there. No notifications or communications of anything wrong from eBay or Paypal, so I shipped the phone. Today, 3 days after I was told by Paypal that the money was in my account, I get a new email from them telling me that they reversed the transaction because of unauthorized use of the Paypal account by the buyer... They took the money from me, I lost the phone and they tell me there is nothing that I can do. PayPal is not responsible and I am out of the money and phone. Watch out, do not use PayPal.

I wouldn't avoid paypal just because of the scams. One should be careful. It's not about paypal, it's about the con artists.

It will be hard not to take Paypal and avoid scams. Paypal (owned by Ebay) has increasingly been favoring the buyer as is Ebay's policy. Buyer is always right and the seller always a crook. Not much you can do. They have the belief that anyone that markets stuff is a walmart and can take some losses as overhead.

All the buyer needs to do is receive the item and file on Paypal "not as advertised" and they will get their money back faster than you can stop it. :-D

There are way to fight back to Nigeria scammer. One of them tried to buy my old laptop and "sent" me $2500 via fake PayPal email (to wrong address, no less!)

Rather than ignore it, I carefully wrapped up a couple bricks that used to be part of my garden (full of fresh tom cat's urine), sent it with declaration of $2500 on custom for a couple "bricked laptops" and a rectangle check-sized sheet of paper drawn in crayons to look like a check for $2000 "refund".

I never heard anything back, tracking showed it was picked up. if the customs took notice of the package, the scammer got hit hard with taxes for a couple $0.80 clay bricks.

There are web site out there that deals with nigerian scammers, like 411 eater I think. I loved the P-p-p-powerbook counter-scam someone pulled on the scammer.

We can not blame PayPal for this. There are certain things which you should take care of yourself for example in this case you should read the sellers feedback first !!!

Cheers

In instances like these, PayPal cannot be blamed. We just have to be extra carefully whether we are the seller or buyer in the transaction. Before it was just sellers/suppliers who would scam buyers but now scammers are disguising themselves as buyers too! If you feel uneasy about a buyer best avoid the transaction.

PayPal accounts can be hacked too! Mine was just recently so we can never be too careful.

Take care :)
