I am a newbie in EBay. I have bid a casette tape in ebay start from 0.99 and i place the bid in 40 and keep leading. At last 2 hour a no record new member raise the price to 100. And i bid 120 and leading. And the new member keep bidding with 122.5 and i give up. Then he suddenly retract with "enter wrong amount" and gone. And i have no time. The auction end.

Is it shilling? I don't know because i have no experience on this. Should i pay for this item?

Thanks for helping.

So you think its the seller that created a new account and used a technique to make you pay more ?

Hi,

Do not pay for this product as the bid does not seem to be fair and valid. How about penny auctions, that is, if youre into bidding already. They are fast paced and the experience is also good.

Usually, people that commit shilling to make real money do it on a bigger scale as a small network, you will find during the course of the bidding frenzy you will notice 2 or 3 names always appearing and bidding on the item you are attemting to buy raising the price between you and them so in the end you pay a hefty priice and they all take a share of the profits!

Although i`m not sure how much this activity goes on anymore?

Yes, shill bidding is a scam and is definitely NOT allowed on any auction site. eBay has very strict rules and policies towards this type of activity.

You may find this guide on how to spot shill bidding activity, useful: http://searchwarp.com/swa12178.htm

Also if you are entertaining the though of trying out this underground scheme, I suggest you think again. An eBay seller in the U.K. could pay 50,000 pounds in fines for bidding on his own items to increase their sale price, a practice called shill bidding. Need I say more? :) To read more about what this guy did, please go to this link: http://www.auctiva.com/edu/entry.aspx?i ... ll-Bidding

Cheers guys!

It's a shame some people don't get it. The way to make real big money with eBay is to run a sound, honest business selling products no one else can sell on solid foundations. It's easier to go along with eBay instead of trying to go against them. They will catch up with unscrupulous activities sooner or later and all the hard work will be lost. In my opinion an honest business is the best policy and you can grow and grow and grow your sales and profits, IF you chose the right products that is.

Yes, JohnB if only most online sellers think the way you do - it would be a lot safer for online shoppers. Unfortunately, a vast number just want to get rich instantly and are willing to resort to doing illegal things such as shill bidding.

eBay has very strict policies against this, yet a few still manage to get away with it :(

I found this post by Mark (Auction Cut's Admin): free-shill-bidding-tool-t50.html - It has a link to a free shill bidding tool, feel free to give it a try.

Cheers! :)

The first ever eBay seller to get sentenced for 10 counts of shill bidding has been fined £5000.00 and sentenced to 250 hours unpaid community service.

With this conviction - eBay shows just how serious they are about shill bidding and that they will do what is needed to keep shill bidders off eBay!

Its always better not to exceed your budget limits while bidding for something because it happens that a person places bidds with different names just to increase the value ( price) of his/her product.

You can report shill bidding and send it to eBay's Safe Harbor. A complete guide can be found here - http://reviews.ebay.com/Shill-Bidding-H ... 0001368684

Hope this helps!
