No, but it seems with a scam like this you as a seller will lose out - Especially if the buyer sends back the alterative item registered post they'll be able to claim you recieved it. Did you win or lose your dispute?

the dispute is still being investigated. i am so mad because if they had sent me the original item i would have given refund and then sent a 2nd chance offer to the next bidder.

I wouldn't agree with that. There always have been and always will be ways to scam people on eBay. Whether you fall for the scams is a different story. However, there are certain scams, like the one described above, that are hard to avoid if you are unlucky enough to come up against a chancer.

By using the word 'almost' you are accepting it's possible.
Ebay is worldwide and the world has many scammers.
You do get a feel for certain scams and forums like this are good place to keep tabs with the scams that get tried.
The one which Paula describes is difficult to guard against, however might I suggest that if you took a photo of the item prior to posting, it may help call the other persons bluff when you challenge what they send back.

taking a photo would be a good safeguard. or maybe even make a little video of the item if its something that makes sound. e.g. a fan or something. then if they send you back a broken one you have proof it worked before you delivered it to them.
