There are a few simple tips everyone can follow to tell if an email has actually come from Ebay or not..Here are a few things to look for, if you know more then feel free to add em..

1. Look to see Who the e-mail is from: When opening the email if you look towards the top of the email it should give an email address, does this email address end with @ebay.com? If not, you know to immediatly remove it

2. Look to see where the link points to: This is probably the fastest, easiest, and most effective way to spot a scam email. Move your mouse over the link but do not click it. Look in the bottom left corner of your screen just above the Start button. It should show the location of the link you are about to click. If the link does not START, and I mean start, with http://www.ebay.com ..then it is a fake email.

3. Ask your host to install mailscanner. Mailscanner will spot and alert you to any phishing attempts as soon as they arrive in your inbox

4. Stop and think before replying. Many spoof emails refer to transactions where your not involved, for example I get many emails asking how much is shipping to Canada when I only sell digital products. Other emails tell me I'm the winning bidder of an item, when I know I haven't bid on anything. If something seems suspicious, do not reply immediatly but wait until you gather your thoughts about it.

5. My Ebay. All legit eBay messages will also appear in My Ebay, so log into your account at www.ebay.com for clarification. If they do not appear here, do not respond to them.

Over the last few months I have received a lot of emails which "enquiry about your listing". Many a time I have not had any active listings - I presume that they contain some sort of Spyware?

If you are suspicious of any emails, do not respond to them and do not click on any links.

Generally the idea is for to to click on the link within the email which redirects you to the spoof site where you enter you account details. At first, it was a pretty good tactic for the spoofers. The first time I got one, I genuinely thought the email was sent to me by mistake and was about to log into the ebay account to reply telling the sender that they'd made a mistake.

However, I then noticed a few errors in the email which made me realise it was a new spoof.

Another good way to avoid being spoofed is by setting up your email account so that it doesn't accept emails from either eBay or PayPal, instead it will send them straight to your deleted mail or whichever folder you chose to put them in. then to read your genuine messages or to see if you really have been paid just log into ebay and paypal.

Recently, I recieved an email saying that it was from ebay.In the subject line it said unpaid item.It was sent to my hotmail email address and they said that it could be unsafe.I wasn't sure what to do when I suddenly realised that I use a different email address on ebay not my hotmail one.So I reported it.

Again, most emails are sent to accounts where your not registered. If you have a specific email account you use with eBay then you'll be able to spot a large majority of spoof emails as soon as they arrive in the wrong email account.

I have almost gotten caught in an ebay fake email more times then I can count now all I do is log into my account to see if it was from ebay directly or not if its not in my messeges on ebay I just ignore it.

i think they just change the reply address in their email program.

Since every last eMail is also posted in eBay I never respond to a eMail outside of eBay.
Unless I've missed something every buyer and seller can be contacted within eBay.

I received an email to another email address that I do not have with eBay stating my account was suspended. I never click on links. I would always to go the eBay or Paypal site directly!

I once received an email suppossibly from my bank stating that I tried to log in to many times and if I did not visit the site (via link) that may account would be suspended. The thing is that this really happend, I mean I forgot my password and got locked out from the site. I called the bank and they did not send such an email! Amazing, almost like a palm reader.

I reported an ebay scam. They have become quite crafty in making it look legit. There is even a way now for people to make it look like a different webaddress in the status bar! You have to be very careful. When in doubt, log in to your ebay account from the regular ebay.com link and write ebay. I think that its important to report these scammers rather than just delete the email so they stop doing this to other people. I just forward the email to ebay. If I remember correctly, ebay has an email listed on their site that is specifically for reporting scams.
