Definitely agree you need to find a niche market. There are thousands and thousands of sellers, many competing in the same or similar markets. You will find it very hard to compete in a market already dominated by power sellers and established ebay sellers. You need to be able to stand out in your own niche. This takes a lot of research before you set out on your ebay career.

Researching what's selling on ebay before jumping in and buying stock then hoping to sell it is the way to start an ebay business on a sure footing. First make sure there's a market for the product you're thinking of selling. once you're happy that there is, then find the product to feed to the market. Ebay provides plenty of free tools for sellers to use to conduct research with. Ebay pulse for example will give you instant feedback on the top searched for products on ebay. It always makes sense to make sure there's a market for what you're thinking of selling before buying any stock.

When starting out, it is very important to do a lot of research. This is specially true if you are thinking of selling on eBay. Indeed, eBay is already dominated by powersellers and established eBay sellers and most of these sellers source their products in very HUGE quantities direct from the manufacturer or liquidators where they get products for pennies on the dollar. This is why it is very important to find a good niche market.

Here are a couple of excellent ways to begin:
1. You can start selling bric-a-brac on eBay from around the home and see what items sell well.
2. Use eBay’s completed listings to find products with high success rates.

When you’ve found a product that sells well, note the average selling price. This is important because the wholesale price needs to be at least 20% lower than the retail price in order for you to make money.

You may check eBay Pulse or Want It Now Section but always remember the basic rule of demand and supply. Go for products that have high demand and low supply. And no matter what you do, stay away from the popular products that are too competitive for a small seller. An example is electronics.

Hope that helps. Good luck!
